Curriculum

We offer a broad and challenging curriculum to our students, from Kindergarten to IGCSE (O-Level) and A-Levels. The curriculum is adapted from the QCA Scheme Framework, the Cambridge IGCSE and the A-Levels syllabi as they approach public examinations.

Students normally select between seven to ten subjects, from a wide range for their IGCSE (O-Level) subjects, which they sit for at the end of Year 11.

The A-Level study programme will also be re-introduced in September 2020

As from April 1st 2020, MIS has embarked on electronic teaching and learning (eTnL) programme enabling lessons to be delivered fully online. Development is ongoing for a more advanced eTnL for the Term 1 Academic year 2020-2021 September start.

As from November 2020, MIS has embarked on a fully integrated e-Academic Reporting Platform (MIS e-ARP) for teachers and parents to closely follow the progress of their child education.

Kindergarten

Using the thematic IPC Early Year Curriculum, Pre School focuses on six areas of development: social and emotional, communication, language and literacy, problem solving, reasoning and numeracy, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development (which include Dance, Drama, Music and Art).

It aims to develop well – balanced young learners through engaging environment that support children’s curiosity and wonder, that engage children and offer them a wide range of material to work with in purposefully designed learning areas.

The curriculum is further supported by integrated phonic programme.

Primary

The Primary years in Melaka International School adopts the highly regarded International Primary Curriculum (IPC) (UK) curriculum. The IPC is a comprehensive and creative curriculum with a structured process of learning. By achieving specific learning goals for every subject, students will be making progress consistently. Foundation to the Maths Program is from Cambridge but enriched and extended using Singapore Maths. Mandarin language classes are offered and students are assigned to appropriate competency levels.

Primary School covers Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6). Our Primary School programme is based on the National Curriculum for England, enhanced by the highly regarded International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and supported by language education in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin.

In Key Stage 1, students are introduced to a broad, balanced, and enjoyable curriculum which provides a foundation for students to think outside the box, reason critically, and communicate effectively. This prepares students to move to the next level – Key Stage 2.

Students enrolled in Melaka International School’s IPC at Key Stage 2 and 3 will be taking a balanced and enjoyable curriculum that will allow knowledge to be applied through hands-on learning strategy and experiential approach. Different aspects of learning and skills are covered through a wide variety of themes in the IPC.

KS: Key Stage

Secondary

The Secondary years in Melaka International School adopts the world-recognised International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE) (UK) curriculum, which is the equivalent to Malaysia’s SPM. The years will be spent learning and absorbing practical knowledge and developing useful and applicable skills through a curriculum that includes career guidance and counselling. This active approach allow students to discover their passion for learning and understanding in order to make better decisions in life when they graduate.

During this stage, students will focus on a selection of subjects that include the core subjects of Maths, English and Science with electives such as Business Studies, Economics, English Literature, Additional Mathematics, and others. A strong tri-lingual foundation in English, Mandarin, and Malay also represents a pillar of success and each day students will be taught by dedicated teachers with the goal of developing every student’s core knowledge, skills, and understanding.

The end of the secondary years culminates in assessments administered by CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Education). Students graduating from Melaka International School can be confident that their transition into pre-university and higher education, both locally and internationally, will be a smooth and rewarding one that will open up opportunities for successful further education and employment in a wide range of careers.

Facilities

Classrooms

Being the first Green School in Malaysia, classrooms are designed with state of the art architecture for comfort and to maximise output of both students and teachers. The classroom size is optimum, designed for no more than 25 students. Furniture and classroom ambience is a result of careful planning. Cheerful colors, balanced lighting and careful positioning of work spaces contribute to the overall feeling of comfort. Education is integrated and activity-based. Assessment is a continuous process at Melaka International School and students are descriptively profiled on their cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills.

History Room

Our school’s History room is a place for students to explore past history and significant events in the past.

Students also learn about the successes of well-known governments and make them a guide for future use in decision making.

Library

We have a well-equipped library with a full-time librarian.

We have more than 5,000 books, a ratio of 36 books to each student, covering a wide range of subjects such as social sciences, Information Technology, philosophy, religion, science, and fiction in English and Bahasa Malaysia. There are also local and international magazines and local newspapers.

There are computers in the library where students can have access to the Internet for research purposes.

ICT Labs

ICT is an integral part of educational activities in the School. Over fifty computers are placed in the Labs exclusively for students use. These machines are supplied with state-of-the-art software and broadband internet.

Science Labs

Science is not only knowledge but also an art. This art is explored, experimented and practised in three Science Labs. There are three Science Labs at Melaka International School. They are equipped with resources meant for Elementary, Middle, Secondary and Senior Secondary students.

Students enjoy fun experiments: Science fair ideas, Electrical and Electronic component usage, Magical power of magnets, Light characteristics, Life science activities, Microorganism slides, Human anatomy charts, Models, Dissecting sets and Microscope.

Gymnasium

The school gym is one of the facilities we provide for students.

It was created to give students a different exposure in building their physical health.

It also caters for training the school athletes.

Canteen

The MIS canteen offers fresh food all the time. Organic Vegetables are directly brought from the School’s Organic farm. Based on produce, menus are designed weekly and changed to suit the requirements of the school. When planning menus, focus is on providing variety and choice whilst stimulating the imagination and encouraging most pupils to eat a healthy meal daily.

Geography room

The Geography room is a place where students are exposed to the many forms and features of the earth. It is also a place where students recognize the many ways people interact with their environment and gain a deeper understanding of the various communities and cultures around the world.

Co-Curricular Activities

  1. CCA is compulsory for all students from Year 3 to Year 10. The activities are optional for Year 1-3 and Year 11.
  2. For the senior students MIS plans to introduce the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme that would allow learners to obtain an internationally recognised young people life achievement award at Bronze, Silver or Gold Medal. This is expected to be rolled out in September 2020.
  3. Every student must enroll for Monday activities.

Counselling Service

At Melaka International School, counselling service plays an important role in the delivery of holistic education. Through this service, we provide not only guidance to our students concerning academic challenges, personal and social development, career choices, but also interventions and mediations to issues before they escalate.

This counselling service is open to all our students regardless of social background, economic or other demographic factors. It is conducted through individual counselling, group counselling and discussions. If you want to see and talk to the counselor, feel free to schedule an appointment with this form.

Furthermore, consultation services are also available to the parents and guardians should the need arise pertaining to parenting matters. 

Career Counselling

At Melaka International School, we would like to play our role in ensuring our students stay relevant in today’s global economy. We have prepared a comfortable and supportive ground for every student to excel not only academically, but also to be equipped with the right understanding on tertiary education and solid career guidance so that they can make informed and realistic choices.
